Nuclear power harnesses nuclear reactions to produce electricity. The first nuclear power plant was built in the 1950s and by the late 1970s the global installed nuclear capacity grew to 100 GW , reaching 300 GW by 1990. The three-mile island, Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents however raised significant public opposition to nuclear power around the world and many countries stopped using the technology as a result.

A new generation of Nuclear Power plants has however put Nuclear Power centre stage once again. This talk will explain the technical background behind nuclear power generation the different forms of power plants including Small Modular Reactors, which is the type proposed for the Cwm Llynfi proposal.

It will also look at how costs are estimated for different power generation technologies, including renewables, and their pros and cons"
